About Me

Pilates is built on the principles of concentration, control, centring, breath, precision and flow — principles that sit at the heart of everything I teach and the way I approach movement.

I'm Caroline Bird, founder of Bird Pilates and a Pilates teacher based in York. My approach is rooted in the original Pilates method, with a strong focus on precision, control, breath and alignment, while always allowing space for flexibility, choice and individuality. I believe Pilates should support your body rather than override it, and that intelligent, effective movement comes from listening to your body just as much as challenging it.

My journey into Pilates developed from a wider background in fitness and bodywork. I initially qualified as a Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer before going on to qualify as a Sports Massage Therapist. This early experience gave me a strong understanding of anatomy, biomechanics and movement patterns, and how the body responds to both exercise and recovery — knowledge that continues to shape and strengthen my teaching today.

I hold a Transcend Level 4 Certificate in Teaching Advanced Pilates Based Matwork (2026), an Ofqual-regulated qualification that further deepened my expertise in anatomy, movement analysis, rehabilitation principles and safe, progressive exercise programming. Alongside this, I have completed specialist training in Pilates for Common Orthopaedic Conditions, Pilates for Older Adults, Pilates for Sport and Pilates with Small Equipment.

I have also completed the Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Exercise Referral, the Active IQ Level 3 Award in Supporting Pre and Postnatal Clients with Exercise and Nutrition, and the Level 3 Nutrition & Weight Management qualification. These additional qualifications have expanded my knowledge of working with individuals managing long-term health conditions and have strengthened my ability to adapt exercise safely and appropriately for a wide range of clients.

While my classes are designed to be inclusive and accessible to everyone, I regularly work with people managing common long-term conditions such as osteoarthritis, hypertension, chronic back pain, reduced mobility and age-related deconditioning. I have a particular interest in helping people return to movement after injury, periods of inactivity or significant life changes, supporting them to rebuild strength, confidence and trust in their bodies.

As a mother of twin boys, I understand how demanding modern life can be and how easily our own wellbeing can slip down the priority list. I know first-hand the importance of finding movement that feels supportive rather than overwhelming. My classes are designed to feel calm, welcoming and intelligently structured, helping clients reconnect with their bodies in a way that feels achievable, empowering and sustainable.

Before transitioning fully into Pilates, I spent eight years working in a corporate environment as a Customer Solutions Analyst at Nestlé. That experience helped shape my organised, professional and structured approach to teaching, while years of working with people have reinforced the importance of empathy, adaptability and clear communication.

My classes combine elements of both classical and contemporary Pilates, alongside functional strength and movement work designed to support the body in everyday life. Sessions are taught in layers, allowing each client to work at a pace and level that feels right for them on any given day. Whether you are completely new to Pilates, returning after a break or looking to build on existing experience, you will be supported throughout.

Above all, I believe movement doesn't need to be extreme to be effective. My goal is to help clients feel stronger, more capable and more confident in their bodies — not just during class, but in everyday life as well.

I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly undertake further training to ensure my teaching reflects current best practice in movement, rehabilitation and client care.
